India to Develop its Own Web Browser

India, as part of its Aatmanirbhar initiatives, plans on developing the country’s own web browser to compete with other widely used foreign browsers like Chrome and Firefox. MeiTY, or the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has announced the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge, inviting Indian startups and companies to be a part of it.

Here’s more about it.

Indian Web Browser to Take on Chrome and Firefox to be Developed

India has been progressing as a developing country and is on the path to becoming the third-largest economy in the world. Now, as an extension of its Aatmanirbhar Bharat development plans, the country is going to develop its own web browser.

Speaking about internet users of the country accounts for about 850 million users and among which 88.47% of users rely on Google’s Chrome Web browser, followed by Apple’s Safari with 5.22% of users. Microsoft Edge is used by 2% and 1.5% of users use the Samsung Internet Browser. The rest, 1.53% of users, are relying on other not-so-widely used browsers.

The goal of this initiative is to get more control over the digital sphere, and this is why the decision to develop the country’s own web browser has been put into plan. Depending on the foreign web browsers may also lead to security and privacy concerns and issues, as noted by an Indian official, and having an Indian web browser is the only solution there is.

India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeiTY) has thus announced the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge with a cash prize of 3.4 crore rupees for the developer/developers who are able to bring out the best browser that will be compatible with all operating systems, and following the necessary standards and guidelines mentioned. Any Indian startups or companies registered under the Companies Act of 2013 can participate. It should also be noted that at least 51% of the shares should be owned by Indian citizens and no startups or companies which are a subsidiary of a foreign company can participate.

This initiative is also viewed as an opportunity for the government to convince US web browser companies to include and integrate India’s web security certification authority in their “trust stores”(or “root stores”). As of now, the country is not part of the trust stores of any major browsers.

Emergency Alert Sent by the Department of Telecommunications was a Test Alert, Not to Panic

Indian mobile users today morning on the 20th of July 2023 had received an alert message on their mobile devices with the message “Emergency alert: Severe”. The message was sent all of a sudden by the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, and soon after receiving the alert message, people across the country started to panic.

Citizens don’t have to worry as the emergency alert message was just a test alert as indicated on the message and was sent to test the readiness of people when such a message was sent to them.

Here’s more about it.

Test Alert Sent by Department of Telecommunications Spreads Panic

The country for quite a short period of time today was in a state of shock when all of a sudden a message started to be received on mobile devices. The message which addressed an emergency alert that was titled “severe” made people panic that they forgot to read the latter part of the message or couldn’t really digest what was written below. The weather conditions that are currently present in the country were another reason for the panic.

The message was sent for a test purpose by the Department of Telecommunications of the country just to check the efficiency of such a message or alert if it was sent to people at a time of emergency. It was also sent with the purpose to familiarize people with the format of such emergency messages and also to check the network infrastructures and quality of network services offered by the network providers of the country.

As mentioned, people shouldn’t panic and should take the message as a test alert and nothing more.

Discovery of Lithium resource in J&K

India is expected to auction lithium blocks that were found at the beginning of this year in the Salal-Haimana area of Reasi district, Jammu & Kashmir. This news has been reported by Reuters to whom Vivek Bharadwaj mining secretary said “have recommended transaction advisor to Jammu and Kashmir government for lithium reserves auction”. The Indian government is looking towards boosting electric vehicle manufacturing in India and the 5.9 million tonnes of lithium blocks discovery in Jammu and Kashmir was a great fortune. Lithium being a nonferrous metal is a key component in EV batteries.

India became the seventh largest resource of lithium globally after the discovery of such a massive amount of lithium in Jammu and Kashmir which somehow brought a ray of hope for the lithium-ion battery manufacturer in India. Currently, India is dependent on China and other countries for the import of Lithium which is vulnerable to dollar Rupert fluctuation, and supply chain disruption. Aditya Vikram, managing director of Renon India, a lithium-ion battery manufacturer from Gujrat in a statement made to Quartz said “Lithium batteries comprise around 100-200 lithium cells for electric two-wheeler applications. Lithium cells are composed of elements like lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel, copper, graphite, and others. The advantage the domestic market can give us is a stable supply independent of evolving geopolitics”.

Homegrown lithium-ion battery manufacturing companies to EV companies all will experience the advantage of this lithium reserve and the news of the auction shows the development in the step of its extraction.

A Jammu and Kashmir-based journalist Ahmed Ali Fayyaz has shared the news on Twitter that is the potential to change the fate of J&K and the whole of India. This news is about the Geological Survey of India’s recent finding in which they have found 5.9 million tonnes of Lithium inferred resources in J&K. This resource has been found in the Salal-Haimana area of Reasi District of Jammu Kashmir. If we talk about the importance of Lithium it is a key component used in the manufacturing of EV batteries. Further, the journalist shared the data on lithium resources in different countries which showed

China – 5.1 MT Lithium resource
USA – 7.9 MT Lithium resource
India – 5.9 MT ( as per the GSI data)

This is going to be a game changer for the economy of J&K and the whole of India too. One of the Twitter users Mutahir Khan wrote in a comment “Means the future lies here”, while another user Rakesh Dhar shared a detailed analysis by writing “ The availability of Lithium is good news but it needs to be refined before it can be used in batteries. More than 50% of Lithium is mined in Australia and 85% of Lithium refining capacity is in China”

Recently Vimanas have appeared in books, films, the internet, and video games. What if we tell you that these Vimanas are nothing new and have been a part of our ancient Indian history?

Shocked right, well it is true. The Sanskrit word Vimana has appeared several times in Vedas with several meanings ranging from temple or palace to mythological flying machine. These Vimanas were able to travel into space and underwater. Remember the Ramayana Pushpaka, used by Ravana, or the flying chariots used in Mahabharata. There are also references to flying machines in temple carvings and in ancient writings.

This shows that ancient Indians were way ahead than we can think and therefore enjoyed glory in the area of Science & Technology. Academy of Sanskrit Research in Mysore claimed that they have collected manuscripts that were compiled by Rishis thousands of years ago. Manuscripts dealt with Aeronautics, the construction of various types of aircraft for civil aviation and for warfare.

Also in 1991, David Hatcher Childress wrote a book, “ Vimana Aircraft of Ancient India & Atlantis “ that covered the secrets of constructing airplanes that will not break, not catch fire, and cannot be destroyed.

According to the texts Vimanas were powered by jet engines and the flight manuals of the Vimanas are quite similar to the flight manuals we find in modern civil and military aircraft. It suggests that Vimanas were powered by several gyroscopes placed inside a liquid mercury vortex. One of the texts also talks about mercury rotating and driving some sort of powerful propeller or fan . Vimanas were sometimes said to be propelled by a yellowish-white liquid that sounds more like gasoline.

Some of the Ancient Indian flying vehicles were-

  • RUKMA VIMANA
  • SHAKUNA VIMANA
  • SUNDARA VIMANA
  • TRIPURA VIMANA

When Alexander invaded India in 300 BC, his historians chronicled that at one point they were attacked by “fiery flying shields.” As per John Burrows, Sanskrit texts have references to gods who fought battles in the sky using Vimanas equipped with weapons as deadly as current times. There are also references of highly maneuverable and powerful Vimanas launching single projectiles charged with ‘all power of the Universe’ resulting in huge columns of smoke and fire equivalent to tens of thousands of suns. Even in Ramayana, a detailed story of a trip to the Moon in a Vimana has been mentioned.

Now in modern times, Indians tend to overlook these ancient texts and manuscripts but these above facts and manuscripts give us a brief knowledge that the ancient Indians were way more knowledgeable in terms of technology and science. Chinese scientists have also announced that they studying ancient Indian data for their space program.
