Google introduces Android Earthquake Alert System in India

Earthquakes in India have occurred rapidly over the past few years and in some areas, these earthquakes have caused huge damage to the residents and also to the properties. What if you get a warning about these earthquakes so that you can take timely precautions and ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones?

Google has arrived with an interesting feature for its Android users in India- the Earthquake Safety Alert System. Google has launched this feature today in India in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and National Center for Seismology (NCS), Ministry of Earth Sciences. As per the blog post, Google has mentioned that this Android Earthquake Alert system in India operates by having plugged-in and charging Android phones detect initial tremors and relay this data to a central server. When multiple phones in the same area detect similar shaking, the server can estimate the earthquake’s epicenter and magnitude and then swiftly send alerts to nearby Android devices.

According to the blog, Android users in India with devices running Android  5 or newer will receive this feature in the coming week.

How to turn on or off Earthquake Safety Alert?

  • Open your phone’s settings app
  • Tap Safety & Emergency and then Earthquake alerts
  • (In case of not having a Safety & Emergency tab) Tap Location and then Earthquake alerts
  • Turn Earthquake alerts on or off
