Indian Government explores ‘direct to mobile’ option for live TV on phone without internet

Shocked after reading the headline? Till now we have come across the option of watching television content on the particular channel’s OTT app with the help of internet service. This option was an advantage for many users to watch their favorite TV shows at any time whenever they are free. But what if you get to watch television on your handset without the help of internet connectivity?

This service is termed as Direct to mobile technology that will allow mobile phone users to watch live TV on their devices without a data connection. As per reports, the Department of Telecommunication, as well as IIT Kanpur, are working on the details. A meeting on this matter is planned for next week which is believed to be attended by officials from DoT, MIB, and IIT Kanpur as well as representatives from the telecom and broadcast industry.

The reach of TV is limited to 210-220 million homes but for smartphones, there are around 800 million users which is expected to reach 80% by 2026. Also as per reports, 80% of traffic on the internet is video streaming therefore the Indian government thinks that mobile is the perfect option for broadcast along with TV. As they wanted to use phones for content delivery like educational and emergency alert systems.

Though the telecom operators might be against this matter as their data revenue will be affected if the government carries on with this plan. According to one of the officials,” We are exploring the feasibility. The final decision will be taken after meeting all the stakeholders, including the telecom operators.”

Let’s see what the government decides for this plan, but if the plan gets a green signal then Indian consumers will soon get a chance to watch live TV without the worry of data connection.
