While ordering food on Swiggy we came across this new feature allowing to track order status on iOS lock screen

Food delivery app notifications have nowadays become so personalized that it just feels like a friend next door asking for an outing or treat. Some of the notifications read “need a good excuse to not cook”, and “Caffeine is great, but you still need food, Barkha”.

After these notifications of food delivery apps, one that has most intrigued me recently is its “Live Activities” support allowing iPhone users to track their order on the lock screen and Dynamic Island. I came across this interesting and less talked about feature on the Swiggy food delivery app which is quite interesting as speculations were around Uber Eats to bring it in India.

It would certainly make it easy for the users to order and keep track of their orders and that’s too without opening the screen lock. You won’t have to sit and refresh the live location page showing the live location of the food delivery man.

Basically, an order placed by the user is followed by the six-stage of notifications which includes

  • Order received/accepted
  • The restaurant is preparing food
  • The delivery partner has reached the restaurant
  • The order is out for delivery
  • The delivery partner has reached the location
  • Order delivered

I didn’t have to keep an eye on the live track to see where the delivery man had reached. As soon as the screen locked, a widget on display appeared on the lock screen showing all the aforementioned notifications in steps with graphics. It didn’t require a refresh page in order to update the status but it happened automatically which was quite magical making me less anxious about the status.

Apple introduced the Live Activities feature with the iOS 16 update but earlier didn’t support third-party apps. As soon as the iOS 16.1 update came it brought support for third-party apps and Swiggy eager to adapt hopped on. In a blog post shared by the designer at Swiggy he wrote that the earlier designer team planned to present a progress bar or map in Dynamic Island for live notification but to not anchor users for long they chose the illustrations of status.

While apps like Uber Eats have just started rolling out Live Activities support around the world, Swiggy has made a big leap by rolling it out for a big section of users.

Zomato’s “Live Notification” is no different from Swiggy’s which uses 3D elements, a progress bar and shows the time it will take to deliver the order.
